The bank holiday weekend brought us all kinds of enjoyment but if you’re a lover of afrobeats, you will know that this marked the most anticipated event- AfroRepublik; an indoor festival headlined by the Starboy himself, Wizkid. Of-course no concert is complete without merchandise, and Wizkid and his team did not forget this.
Curated by Irene Agbontaen, a pop-up took place at One by One London which saw the release of Tees, Hoodies, and accessories that made reference to the artist, so of-course we had to pull over. With the show selling out the O2, it was no surprise that the pop-up drew in masses of people, and was busy from start till finish.
The range featured printed tees with phrases such as ‘Ojuelegba’ and ‘Wizkid’ emblazoned across them. The two most popular items appeared to be the red and black Starboy bandana, which was sold out by mid-afternoon, and the Starboy graphic Tee, which featured an illustration of Starboy himself in a balaclava holding a wad of money (very wavy). These simple yet effective designs captured Wizkid’s love for his home country-Nigeria, and gave fans another opportunity to show support.
The team didn’t just leave the merchandise to do the talking but instead redesigned the space to provide a full on visual experience by placing black and white images of the artist shot by Dalia Dias around the store, as well as having a collection of old skool TVs showing videos of WizKid which made for an inviting and aesthetically pleasing space.
The pop-up brought in a number of artists such as Tiwa Savage, Mabel, DJ Radi Dadi, Skepta and Maleek Berry, as well as designers and other creatives, all sharing an appreciation for Afrobeats and the merchandise on display. It was virtually impossible to leave without purchasing an item, especially with the show being the following day. The staff were also on hand for all sizing queries, and in some cases, photo opportunities!
Wizkid, Irene, and the team, did an excellent job for the culture! We don’t know any other pop up that would have you doing Shaku Shaku while making a payment, that alone is a testament to the good vibes all round.
